T-14 Armata
Russian Main Battle Tank (Object 148)
The T-14 Armata (industrial designation: Object 148) is a Russian fourth-generation main battle tank based on the Armata Universal Combat Platform. It was first publicly revealed on May 9, 2015, during the Moscow Victory Day Parade.
The MBT is 10.435m long, 3.82m wide and 3.218m tall and a weight of 55 tonnes.
Historically, the T-14 is derived from the remnants of two major canceled Russian tank projects from the late Cold War and post-Soviet era:
- The T-95 (Object 195): Canceled around 2010, the T-95 was a highly classified prototype that first introduced the concept of an unmanned turret and a heavily armored crew capsule in the hull. The T-14 is a direct evolutionary successor to the research done on the T-95.
- The "Black Eagle" (Object 640): A 1990s prototype based on a lengthened T-80U chassis that experimented with compartmentalized ammunition storage and advanced turret designs to increase crew survivability.
The T-14 represents a paradigm shift in Russian tank design, prioritizing crew survivability, a historical weakness in older Russian tanks, equipped with traditional carousel autoloaders in the crew compartment.
Key features:
- Unmanned Turret & Crew Capsule: The most defining feature of the T-14 is its unmanned turret. The three-man crew (commander, gunner, and driver) is seated side-by-side in a heavily armored titanium and steel capsule located in the front of the hull. This isolates the crew from the ammunition and the autoloader, drastically increasing their chances of surviving a penetrating hit.
- Armament: The primary weapon is the 125mm 2A82-1M smoothbore gun. It is fed by an autoloader containing 32 ready-to-fire rounds (with a total capacity of 45 rounds). Like many Russian tanks, the main gun can fire Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs), such as the 9M119M1 Invar-M. Secondary armament typically includes a 12.7mm Kord heavy machine gun and a 7.62mm PKTM machine gun mounted on remote weapon stations.
- Protection: The tank utilizes a layered defense approach. It features a new base steel armor (44S-sv-Sh), covered by Malachit dual-explosive reactive armor (ERA). Furthermore, it is equipped with the Afghanit Active Protection System (APS), which uses radar to detect incoming anti-tank munitions and fires interceptor charges to destroy them before they hit the hull.
- Mobility: It is powered by a ChTZ 12N360 (A-85-3A) diesel engine producing up to 1,500 horsepower, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It has an official top road speed of 75 km/h.
