X-35C
The X-35C was the carrier-based demonstrator built specifically to satisfy the requirements of the U.S. Navy, which needed a stealth fighter capable of enduring the extreme stresses of catapult launches and arrested recoveries on aircraft carriers.
Unlike the X-35B, the X-35C was built as a completely separate airframe from the start. To achieve the slower approach speeds required for safe carrier landings, the X-35C featured a significantly larger wing area and enlarged tail control surfaces compared to the A and B models, providing increased lift and low-speed handling. Additionally, the airframe incorporated a heavily reinforced internal structure, ruggedized landing gear to absorb the impact of carrier deck landings, and a tailhook assembly at the rear. This prototype successfully demonstrated its low-speed handling characteristics and simulated carrier approaches, paving the way for the production F-35C Lightning II.
